Key Points:

1) Why WELS?

  • Live in native English speaking instructor provides before and after school care, supervision and English instruction for students.
  • Private tutoring three times per week.
  • USDA organic meals for breakfast, brunch, dinner.

2) Goals

  • The goal at WELS is to expose its students to California's global sensibilities and thereby open their minds to life's possibilities in a global age.
  • For young men and women planning to study or work in Western society, the WELS experience will provide a foundation of cultural understanding that is bound to lead to success in their future endeavors.

3) St. Hyacinth Academy

  • WELS students spend their days from 8:00am to 3:00pm at St. Hyacinth Academy, which offers an exhilarating educational experience.
  • Students are allocated to small groups with certified teachers.
  • St. Hyacinth Academy is rich in school tradition and aims to create an environment which stimulates learning, promotes growth and allows each child to attain their potential.
  • Students will participate in an intensive academic and balanced recreation program throughout their studies with 6 hours of instruction Monday to Friday.
  • Currently there are no other Korean students attending St. Hyacinth.
  • In the company of their western peers they go through the full curriculum for their age, guided by teachers who are sensitive to the linguistic challenge faced by these visiting children.
  • This time at school also gives WELS students the opportunity to interact and make friends with students of their own age from different backgrounds and nationalities.
  • WELS instructors help students with their homework after school and also preview the next day's lesson.

4) Talent Show & Farewell Party

The program culminates with a talent show and farewell party to which the local residents are invited. This is when WELS students have the opportunity to take what they have learned during their stay in the United States and combine it with their experiences from back home to demonstrate their talents in an evening never to be forgotten.

5) Special trips
Perhaps the greatest highlights of the WELS program in California are the special excursions to:

6) Highland Springs Resort

Located 90 mins from Los Angeles, and with sweeping views of the San Bernardino Mountains, Highland Springs Resort accommodates students in quaint cottage units that are fully furnished with a private bathroom, equipped with a television and humidifier, air conditioning, and all students have access to the Internet. Maid service is also included. Students will participate in various outdoor activities at Highland Springs Resort including:
  • Archery
  • High Ropes Course
  • Wall Climbing
  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Team Building

7) Why California?

California's diversity in terms of its people, food and culture is unparalleled on the West Coast. Our California Program offers an amazing array of cultural, sporting and entertainment events and opportunities. Live the California Dream by exploring the celebrity handprints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, take a tour of the stars' multi-million dollar Beverly Hills mansions or window shop for the latest fashions in Rodeo Drive's exclusive boutiques. Check out the eccentric performers along Santa Monica Beach or take a campus tour of UCLA.

MEALS: Meals provided outside will contain a dollar limit of $10 per lunch and $15 per dinner.
